Ironically enough, the guy whom I replaced was in fact russian.

well, my deal is that I have only been doing theoretical and havent done anything in the real world other than my own websites. My last job promised that I would be given a chance at doing that and my coworker was extremely willing to give me some work and go thru it with me until I got the hang of it, but my boss didnt want to spend the money for me to learn it. He just had me out doing work he didnt hire me to do.

What kind of work do you do again? was it a game tester?

Russians are awesome. We had some guys who would come in from our studio in Vladivostok. Great people. Big Grin

I used to work for Mumbo Jumbo testing games, but the company laid off pretty much their entire production team except for two artists and I think one programmer. They even let go the level designer who practically built that company. If you're interested, wikipedia Level Lord or Richard Gray. He's worked on some great games before getting into casual games. He's also a really great person, and it was an honor to have random chatter and to learn from him.

It's back to the call center for me, but I hope not for long. I'm looking into going to school for web design. I thought briefly of graphic design, but I don't think I draw well enough. :S

Computer Science is an excelent field to get into. the upside is that it pays well, but you have to be a math wiz and it can get a little boring. being a web designer also helps if you have a graphic designer that can do your images. Do you have an idea on what school you are going to?

Ever since we had a discussion on switch statements, I find myself using them more frequently..

As far as figuring out hex codes, I just load an image I like in Gimp or PS, and use that eyedropper to get the color I'm lookin for. That color wheel looks pretty damn cool though! I'll be using that now instead, methinks.

That comic is classic, but the "sanitize your database inputs" approach is just wrong. Instead, he should be pushing prepared statements with escaped output. Then again, the PHP devs have been pushing concatenated strings run through mysql_really_escape_dis_shit_im_serious_fuck_i_mean_it_this_time-style functions for a long time.

The worst approach is something that my sysadmin used to do: delete all occurrences of the words "UPDATE", "DELETE" and "DROP" from all input sources.

if there is no local area ID found, drop the load data.
or, in code form:
if (!getLAid()) dropLoad();
line 525 of software that ships tomorrow.
my work here is done.

2.5 for the next few months until the various C extensions (PIL, Numpy) are ported to 2.6.

3.0 in a year or two.

I just added an incredibly crude signal functionality into ps2client for Windows. I wanted to make a TurboGears app that would start and stop ps2client on demand, but Python doesn't have a way to force sub-processes to terminate on Windows.

The main execution thread of ps2client is just an empty never-ending for-loop that sleeps, so I decreased the sleep time, and made it scan for a specific file. If it finds the file, it deletes it, and then terminates. It's not the greatest solution ever, but it seems functional enough. I never thought I'd have an actual use for the shit I learned from that C programming class.

Edit: Now I feel pretty dumb. You can kill a Windows process via the ctypes library, which can interface with kernel32. fuck.

People that are frightened by duck typing crack me up. Duck typing puts the burden on the programmer to do the right thing, and if the programmer can't be trusted to do the right thing, the programmer should get out.

Everything I've done with python has been web-based. I really like TurboGears 2.

If I were going to do a GUI app with python though, I would probably use wxPython.
