Sorry in advance if this has been asked before, but I searched 'vocals' and no threads posing the question were found.
All my life I've tried to mimic Wayne's vocals and never made it to a satisfactory level. Coming from a death metal/black metal background I have no trouble doing the vocals found in lines like "Great pains, I've gone to gang slang, I've gone to lame brain, looking for gold - I [growl]" But the trademark scream that can be found in the chorus to songs like _In a Bag [I'm cursing I'm searching, Giving up], I'm With Stupid [He's a loser, she said!], The Trance is the Motion [This is the motion of the new revolution!] and Wisconsin Death Trip [Get up on this Wisconsin Death Trip!] - I have absolutely no idea to do. I want the advice of any budding vocalists who think they know but I really hope to hear it from the man himself. Is it a matter of vocal range? Is it just because he has a naturally high vocal range and can hit those notes? Or is there a technique that Wayne specifically employs? Please no posts like "Everyone is unique you should accept your voice etc.", I'm am perfectly happy with my voice, but to learn a technique like this would be amazing. Thank you. |

Well coming from someone else who practices harsh/screaming/growling vocals, I can tell you that Wayne's sound is extremely unique. On a positive note, I'm pretty sure a sound similar to his is attainable. I've heard another industrial band who had Static-X as a main influence, and the vocalist at one point sounded like Wayne. As for the specifics, we can just wait for Wayne.
EDIT: Can anyone help me out in finding that one dude who posted his band? He said people told him they sound similar to Static-X. I still can't figure it out. His fry screams from SAW and growls from WDT are spot on, but I can't figure out what is going on with his other sounds. So my suggestion is to just master your Fry and experiment with it from there. Hey there! I've been a vocalist for about 15 years now in classical, so I can't directly answer your question, but I think you hit it on the head with it being a matter of vocal range. Have you tried singing(screaming) those lines in a couple keys below/above the originals?

I think the main problem is the vocal range as far as key and notes are concerned. I have a good singing voice and great pitch, but I think Wayne can get like a whole octave or something above me haha.
I hope there is some magical technique he can teach us. |
