I took a cursory look over the forum and could not find a thread on this topic--If I missed it, I apologize in advance. Also, I felt that it was directly related to Static-X, therefore I placed the thread in this part of the forum rather than the non-Static-X general discussion. Anyway....
I've played music myself for many years, and it was Static-X that I credit for helping me get out of my narrow "death metal bubble" that I had always been in. What they've done is something so simple yet unique, combining the electronic/cyborg elements of industrial with straight forward, catchy thrash metal riffs, and memorable choruses. I believe the club manager from "Where The Hell Are We And What Day Is It", when he says that Static-X masterfully struck a balance between the heavy stuff and the groovy stuff (paraphrasing here), keeping the pit going and at the same time keeping the ladies shaking their asses. It's a great combination and an awesome sound, and when I gave it a chance, I was hooked. My comment/question is this: Do other bands qualify as being "Evil Disco", assuming we view Evil Disco as being an actual, valid genre? SHOULD we view it as being a genre? Or should it remain exclusive to Static-X? I believe we should view it as a genre that any band can be a part of, and I think that as a genre the surface of potential has only been scratched. I think doing so is good for everyone, and I think it can lead to a resurgence in the genre as a whole. Some bands that I see as being "Evil Disco", or damned close to it: Ministry, Prong, Pain, The Deathstars, The Genitorturers, Puncture, Dope, and The Murderdolls. What are your thoughts? Any other bands you'd view as being "Evil Disco"? |

Other bands that I would consider in the same category as Static-X would be Powerman 5000 and Rob Zombie.
This article should answer a bunch of your questions. L.A Times on Static-X. See You In Tee |

The only band that I can think of (that hasn't been mentioned) is The Berzerker; but they're a little too heavy.

Thanks for the link, Static-Assault, but I was more curious about how people on this forum feel about the idea of Evil Disco as a genre, as say, death metal is. Cannibal Corpse, come out and say, "We're a death metal band". So does Obituary, Morbid Angel, and Dismember.
I want to know how people here feel about Evil Disco being more than just a name to describe one band's sound, rather a genre to describe many bands on a whole. If Pain for instance came out and referred to themselves as Evil Disco, would it stick? would the people accept it? do you guys think that Static-X would accept it or do you think they'd want to keep the term to describe the music of Static-X exclusively? Is it more important that the term remain exclusive to Stati-X or that it be allowed to describe an entire genre? I personally accept it as a genre, and believe that bands that choose to embrace it, while giving credit to Wayne Static and Co., can possibly keep this whole thing rolling for years to come. It's been percolating since before Static-X's arrival, what with bands such as Ministry, but it's true potential hasn't been reached and it never really coalesced. I believe that bands embracing the sound and openly calling it what it is--Evil Disco--might be able to spur a kind of revolution that's been brewing but hasn't really exploded beyond a couple of bands at most. Thoughts? |

Bands aforementioned earlier, including Static-X themselves, are probably better suited under the "industrial" umbrella.
Evil Disco sounds like it wouldn't be taken seriously as a genre. I think the term should just be exclusive to the band. |
